Doom

In 1993 we got the first epic soundtrack in a series of totally epic soundtracks! This game was so influential for first-person shooters that many first-person shooters released after this for a time were referred to as “Doom Clones” (one in particular that I love is Star Wars: Dark Forces). Needless to say, this game was epic; I mean it starts the player on Mars and eventually brings them to the gates of Hell!

If I were to guess I’d say that Doom definitely took some inspiration from Metallica. The first song itself, At Doom’s Gate, bears a striking resemblance to Master of Puppets. That doesn’t make it any less epic though. If this doesn’t get you into a mood to fight the undead, I don’t’ know what does. The score is insane just like the game and it’s perfect.

There’s also the slower foreboding music, of which there’s no better way to describe it than as the “impending doom”. It was obviously made on older computers and their synthesizers, but if you can get past that fact the soundtrack brings so much terror it’s almost infuriating (in a good way).

There’s not much to say about this soundtrack. It’s rare that composers can use a score that’s a total headbanger, but here it works so well. Even the more tense moments are excellent. Because of that I give this soundtrack 5 out of 5 soul spheres.

I will see you all later. Until then, have fun shooting demons.
